Featuring feminine florals and exotic birds in a mix of soft pastel shades and bold vivacious colours, the collection is really stunning. You're sure to feel inspired to jot down your ideas, take note and get things in good order.

Perhaps you have seen the lovely new line of jewellery at the Bottle Kiln called Orelia? The stunning range of trinket and charm-laden chains, dangly earrings and colourful friendship bracelets have proved to be a real hit!

Orelia, based in Brighton, offers feminine, eclectic and bohemian jewellery featuring pretty Swarovski crystals, semi-precious stones, beautiful and quirky pendants and plaited ribbons. They launch new collections six times a year so their range is always fresh and different. Louisa and Collette, the brands founders, take their inspiration from the colourful markets of Bangkok to the boutiques of Saint-Tropez. Their accessories certainly give a sunshine feel!

One our favourite pieces in the current collection is the little star pendant. Simple and delicate, it would make a lovely gift. It's really pretty worn on its own or layered up with other necklaces for a funky, eclectic look.

Please excuse us while we blow our own trumpet for a moment... We’re so proud to say we are winners of the Independent Gift Retailer of the Year - Midlands and East Anglia!

The Progressive Gifts & Home Magazine organises 'The Greats Awards' and hosted a thoroughly enjoyable, glittering event at the Lancaster Gate Hotel on 17th May, where members of the gift industry gathered to recognise those businesses which set the standards in innovation, customer service and display.

Nic and Linda Stone attended the awards ceremony and collected the trophy on behalf of all of the staff at the Bottle Kiln. After the 'Greats' success Nic commented: "It is fantastic that our business, which for years has been one of those 'best-kept secret' type of places, has broken out more into the public consciousness. We have put a great deal of energy and resources in recent years into bringing everything we do up to a level that we are really happy with, and do feel very proud to receive this tremendous recognition."

We are a family business and are all thrilled to be recognised in the industry for our endeavours - it's always nice to get a pat on the back. Of course, we wish to thank all of our wonderful customers for supporting us. We have many regular visitors who think of us and pop in when they need a little gift or accessories for themselves or the home. We really appreciate your continued custom and always aim to provide a welcoming and interesting shopping experience. And, we promise not to let this excellent accolade go to our heads!!

We have been serving the Blackburn Estate, Clouds of August, artisan coffee for a few weeks now and we really love it! It has a beautiful, clean, sweet and juicy profile and suggests bright red cherries and demerara sugar - simply stunning. Expertly roasted for us by Peter at James Gourmet Coffee, specifically with filter brewing in mind but also perfect in a cafetiére. Perhaps you've tried it?

The Blackburn Estate in Tanzania

Farm Size: 1,124 acres
Coffee Area: 187 acres
Varietals: Kent, Nyassa, KP432 and Bourbon
Rainfall: 87cm per year
Region: West of Oldeani (Karatu District)

If you are not familiar with the background, Michael Gehrken (born in Germany) returned to Tanzania in the early 1980s to live, and governmental freedoms allowed him to save his parents farm later in the decade.

On Michael's return to Blackburn, baboons had taken over the house and the coffee plantations were unsurprisingly hugely over grown. Over the last 20 years Blackburn estate has emerged as a beacon of quality as a producer as well as a guardian of the environment. 80% of the farm is still a nature reserve, whilst there are NO insecticides used on the farm, making production virtually organic.

The estate lies along the southern border of the Ngorongoro Crater, a haven for wildlife and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Animals are entirely free to wander beyond the unfenced park boundaries - lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and many other species roam through the coffee and forest areas of the farm at night. There are also two large troops of baboons numbering more than 100 individuals that occasionally roost overnight in the large mature trees at the north-west boundary of the coffee area though efforts are always made to discourage these animals as they eat the coffee!

The farm is overshadowed by Mount Oldeani (meaning ‘bamboo mountain’) to the east which stands at 3,188m and covers a total area of 455 hectares (1,124 acres). Most of the land is set aside as natural habitats such as savannah, grassland and thick bush. This, in turn, supports a huge variety of wildlife species.

Around the farm, several small pyres of coffee parchment and red chillies are set on the windward boundaries of the coffee plots to deter elephants from damaging the coffee plants. Special bio-corridors have also been established to funnel the larger animals around the farm to the east and west.

Thank you to Peter of www.jamesgourmetcoffee.com for this very interesting information.

The Bottle Kiln is one of the best gift retailers in the UK - it’s official!
We have been selected as a finalist by Progressive Gifts and Home Magazine, in the Independent Gift Retailer of the Year - Midlands and East Anglia category.

The winners of this year’s gift retailing awards, affectionately known as The Greats, will be revealed at a glittering awards event at London’s Lancaster Hotel on Thursday 17th May.

The Greats, now in their tenth year, are established as the premier gift retailer awards event of the year. They recognise the top independent and multiple gift retailers regionally and nationally, and bring together the entire industry for a night of celebration. The award events are always a lot of fun and you really feel like you are at the Oscars! When we won Best Gift Retailer of Jewellery in 2008 it was a very proud moment. It feels fantastic to be a finalist in the Independent Gift Retailer category this year and we are looking forward to a 'great' night out at next month's circus themed event!

Yesterday, with the sun shining, we pulled on our wellies and set off to Shipley Park in search of magical sapphire carpets. We parked in the Mapperley reservoir car park and walked up the gated road then, taking a path to the right, into the woods. The woodland was quite enchanting. A carved face in a felled tree stump, like a wise man of the woods with a flowing, rooty beard was an interesting feature! We were soon rewarded with pretty clusters of bluebells in dappled sunlit glades. It was so peaceful and relaxing, with the birds and squirrels. Then it was back to the Bottle Kiln for coffee - a pretty perfect day really!

The wood on the opposite side of the road to Mapperley reservoir, Mapperley Wood Nature Reserve, also has impressive bluebell displays and we look forward to exploring that area sometime soon.

At the crossroads, just near the Bottle Kiln, take the road signposted to Mapperley village, go through the village and keep straight on down to the car park by Mapperley Reservoir. Parking is £1.20 for two hours/£2.00 for four hours (there are loos in the car park).
